I'm thinking about tackling window planning myself since hiring someone is way out of budget. My plan is roughly: measure twice (or three times, knowing me), sketch it out, research window types, and then double-check building codes. Anyone got a simpler way or tips I might've missed?

Sounds like you've got the basics covered pretty well. A couple things I'd add from experience:

- Don't just measure the opening—also check if it's square. Older houses (like mine...) can have some wonky angles, and nothing's worse than realizing your perfectly measured window doesn't quite fit because the frame is off.
- Consider the direction your windows face. I learned the hard way that south-facing rooms get HOT if you don't pick the right glass or shading options.
- Think about ventilation. Fixed windows look sleek, but you'll regret not having something that opens when summer hits.
- If you're DIYing the install too, grab a buddy. Windows are heavier and more awkward than they look, trust me.

Good luck—it's totally doable, just take your time and keep the coffee handy.

Good points all around, but honestly, I wouldn't stress too much about fixed windows. We put a couple in our living room because we wanted the unobstructed view, and ventilation hasn't been an issue at all—just balanced it out with opening windows elsewhere. Also, squareness matters, sure, but sometimes you just gotta accept that older homes are quirky...a little creative shimming goes a long way.
